Starting to Wonder

Toward the tail end of our 1 T.B.A. days, we could feel the music changing. Our songwriting was maturing, and we were moving into a more pop-punk and emo-inspired sound. We even flirted with the idea of adding horns and becoming a ska band for a little while. That never quite happened, but it gives you an idea of how much we were experimenting with what came next.

One thing we knew was that we wanted another guitarist. A few different people came to practice with us, but Scott was the one who clicked. Bringing him in gave us the lineup to explore that new direction.

And then there was the name. Funny enough, Starting to Wonder wasn't originally meant to be a band name at all. I'd been saving it for my solo music. The inspiration was pretty simple: I took the name of a band I loved, The Starting Line, and an artist I loved, Stevie Wonder, and mashed them together. Starting to Wonder. Somehow, it fit the band and the moment we were in, so that's what we became.

We played shows and recorded unreleased demos, along with the A Change in Heart EP, but my time in the band eventually came to an end. I left, and Starting to Wonder carried on with a few different singers and other guitarists. Over time, their music moved further away from the pop-punk/emo sound we'd started with and into hardcore and metal. Same name, a very different chapter.

About the recording & credits

Recorded in Scott’s basement on a four-track cassette recorder. We recorded each instrument separately using one microphone per instrument, then digitized the instrumental recordings onto a PC. Vocals were added afterward using Windows XP Sound Recorder.

    That 80s Song
Screaming in pain, waking up without you here by my side
Waking up alone, leaving you behind
Falling apart inside, one by one it breaks to pieces
Leaving my heart in your hands to destroy it
Leave me here to die all alone
Dig a hole and push me inside
    Chorus:
Leave me lying in a ditch
    To rot away my bones
    Stab me in my back
And turn me into a ghost
Stop me from screaming, calling out to you
Turn me face down, so I can’t see you leave me
Leave this place, fall away far from here
Leave me crying, you’ll be left in tears
Leave me here to die all alone
Dig a hole and push me inside
    Repeat Chorus:

    Jamie
    I wake up alone again
Laying in my bed, thinking of you and me
I know we’d be perfect together
But I can’t pick up enough courage to show you
    Chorus:
That I could be the one
To hold you close to me
    And everything could be alright
If you could only see what’s meant to be
    Now I wish I could
    Open your eyes
Show you the world through mine
And everything would go my way
I’d be with you every day
But I know this would never happen to me
    Breakdown:
    Never happen to me
    Repeat Chorus:

    ...A Change in Heart
    Stop me from breathing tonight,
    So when I wake up
I won’t remember a single word you said.
And I can easily sit and relax
The knife is in your hand
And you’re finished with my back.
Peel my face into a circle and see what’s there
See if my eyes can be torn to prevent the tears
See if you can put my smile in your pocket
And with turpentine, try to remove the blood
On my white shirt before you hide me
And if you decide to care,
Whisper in my ear and touch my cheek with your hand
‘Cause it’ll never be too late
    Breakdown: Instrumental
For a change in coarse due to a change in heart

A shattered dream floats through my mind
As I think about what you’ve done
After I saw you with him I thought to myself
Why couldn’t I have won your heart
I lost the war, I’m giving up
You’ve hurt me for the last time
No more wondering, or what ifs
    It’s over because of you
Now I sit here reminding myself
That it wasn’t my choice at all
To have my heart broken again
    It’s all your fault
I never want to see you again
So I’ll be at your house
    To pick up my things
    For the very last time
And if I see him there
I’ll take him home, And tie him up
Leave him there in my room alone
It’ll be the end of you and him

    Invisible
You give me a dark stare that chills me to the bone
You’ve acted so different ever since last night on the phone
You look right through me whenever I see you now
It’s like I’m not even there, can I fix what I did, please tell me how
    Chorus:
    I’m Invisible to you
    You see right through me
    As clear as a crystal
What’s the key to get me out of this world
Whenever I see you, you turn away to look at someone else
There’s something bothering you, but what it is, I just can’t tell
I don’t understand what I did to make you feel how you do
I don’t think I did anything, I think there’s something wrong with you

Archival Lyrics

Moving Away
It was just last summer when we snuck out
Late at night we would sit and talk about
So many things that I can't name them all
Except for one thing I can recall
It was that you were moving away
And I sat and had nothing to say
It was such a shock for me
You’re the best friend there will ever be
Chorus:
And you are leaving me here alone
Left to do things on my own
I can't hold back these tears
They will be shed for years and years
I remember not talking to you for a while
But when I saw you I just had to smile
‘Cause that’s why I called you at three
It was such a blurry memory
I guess it wasn't meant to be
You and me are together for now
But everything has got to end somehow
Repeat chorus:
Breakdown: Instrumental
Outro:
And you are leaving me here alone
      (Please don't leave me)
Left to do things on my own
      (Please don't leave me)
I can't hold back these tears
      (Please don't leave me)
They will be shed for years and years
(Please don't leave me here all alone)
